{"id":1984,"date":"2006-08-08T10:08:00","date_gmt":"2006-08-08T10:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.leobard.net\/blog\/?p=1984"},"modified":"2017-11-04T15:48:11","modified_gmt":"2017-11-04T15:48:11","slug":"going-to-burningman-who-will-be-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.leobard.net\/blog\/2006\/08\/08\/going-to-burningman-who-will-be-there\/","title":{"rendered":"going to burningman-who will be there?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ok, who from the Semantic Web guys and girls is going to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.burningman.com\">Burning Man<\/a> this year?<\/p>\n<p>I am going, and we are blogging here about that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/burningman2006.blogspot.com\/\">http:\/\/burningman2006.blogspot.com\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I tried to find you guys by using search engines, but I am not witty enought to get the right results, so blogging and asking this question is probably ok for today.<\/p>\n<p><b>Here is the story how I tried to find you:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This time I swoogled the semantic web to find out who lives near SFO, which indicates that they may go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.burningman.com\">burningman<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My first try was to go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swoogle.com\">swoogle.com<\/a>, a very interesting website where you may lose hours during your office time. Then I found the search engine at <a href=\"http:\/\/swoogle.umbc.edu\">swoogle.umbc.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to search for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/swoogle.umbc.edu\/index.php?option=com_frontpage&amp;service=search&amp;queryType=search_swd_all&amp;searchStart=1&amp;searchString=ns%3Afoaf%20SFO\">ns:foaf SFO<\/a> but this broke. Internal Server Error in \/work\/swoogle\/www\/swoogle\/3.1\/components\/com_frontpage\/writer.search.php on line 61<\/li>\n<li>perhaps not search documents, search ontologies instead. <a href=\"http:\/\/swoogle.umbc.edu\/index.php?option=com_frontpage&amp;service=search&amp;queryType=search_swd_ontology&amp;searchStart=1&amp;searchString=SFO\">SFO <\/a>&#8211; no results<\/li>\n<li>just entering francisco returned too much.<\/li>\n<li>refining to <a href=\"http:\/\/swoogle.umbc.edu\/index.php?option=com_frontpage&amp;service=search&amp;queryType=search_swd_ontology&amp;searchString=ns%3Afoaf+francisco&amp;searchStart=1\">ns:foaf francisco<\/a>, zero.<\/li>\n<li>at this point, I registered for an account at swoogle, perhaps then more. Hm, no.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ok, perhaps the search syntax is wrong. Lets go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.semanticwebsearch.com\/\">Intellidimension&#8217;s Semantic Web Search engine at www.semanticwebsearch.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ah, they have a combobox where you can select foaf files. Lets do that and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.semanticwebsearch.com\/?st=foaf%3APerson&amp;ss=SFO&amp;go=search\">search for SFO.<\/a>. Hm, one result, a substring match. woah, they do substrings.<\/li>\n<li>searching for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.semanticwebsearch.com\/?st=foaf%3APerson&amp;ss=francisco&amp;go=search\">&#8220;francisco&#8221;<\/a> I get one foaf file seven times. It is a livejournal user, <a href=\"http:\/\/joey-francisco.livejournal.com\/\">joey-francisco<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>ok, now fumbling around with the airport thingy, I tweaked it so that I can finally find Dan Brickley, as an example. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.semanticwebsearch.com\/?st=foaf%3APerson&amp;ss=%5Bhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2F10%2Fswap%2Fpim%2Fcontact%23nearestAirport%5D.%5Bhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.megginson.com%2Fexp%2Fns%2Fairports%23icao%5D%7EEGGD&amp;go=search\">this search for a foaf:person with nearest airport EDDG<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>btw: it also works when you search for &#8220;any resource&#8221;: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.semanticwebsearch.com\/?st=&amp;ss=%5Bhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2F10%2Fswap%2Fpim%2Fcontact%23nearestAirport%5D.%5Bhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.megginson.com%2Fexp%2Fns%2Fairports%23icao%5D%7EEGGD&amp;go=search\">search<\/a><\/li>\n<li>ok, now my<a href=\"http:\/\/www.semanticwebsearch.com\/?st=&amp;ss=%5Bhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2F10%2Fswap%2Fpim%2Fcontact%23nearestAirport%5D.%5Bhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.megginson.com%2Fexp%2Fns%2Fairports%23icao%5D%7ESFO&amp;go=search\"> SFO search<\/a>. brought nothing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ok, change of tactics: shoot straight at the target of burning man.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>semanticwebsearch for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.semanticwebsearch.com\/?st=&amp;ss=burningman&amp;go=search&amp;np=0\">burningman<\/a>. Brings some RSS feeds. Ok, that are bloggers. I need semweb bloggers though.<\/li>\n<li>perhaps some foaf person said something in interests or so? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.semanticwebsearch.com\/?st=foaf%3APerson&amp;ss=burningman&amp;go=search&amp;np=0\">search<\/a>, nothing. <\/li>\n<li>with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.semanticwebsearch.com\/?st=foaf%3APerson&amp;ss=burning+man&amp;go=search\">&#8220;burning man&#8221;<\/a> we get two livejournal users.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ok, lets see what the market leader does.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>google for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=burningman+semantic+web&amp;start=0&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;rls=org.mozilla:de:official\">burningman semantic web<\/a>. 50.000 results. My <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;ct=res&amp;cd=3&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fleobard.twoday.net%2Fstories%2F2467726%2F&amp;ei=Q0_YRLq2CZ3M2wKI_6ncCQ&amp;sig2=1MaKahxB1bAkniSf3v0XJQ\">own blog post<\/a> on clothes is far on top, first page.<\/li>\n<li>hm, groucho marx said not to join a club that would accept you. So that high ranked blog entry of myself, hm. Ok, first ranked was a <a href=\"http:\/\/rdfig.xmlhack.com\/2003\/06\/10\/2003-06-10.html\">#rdfig scratchpad entry<\/a>. But the nym user on  #rdfig only pointed to a now dead website.<\/li>\n<li>I limit to 2006.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=burningman+semantic+web&amp;start=0&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;rls=org.mozilla:de:official\">limit to 2006<\/a>, to get this years burners. My blog post again.<\/li>\n<li>Looking at the results, I find the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogsicle.net\/\">blog of Peter Brown at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogsicle.net\/\">http:\/\/www.blogsicle.net\/<\/a><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ok, so I didn&#8217;t hear of these guys before and I see that this use case is interesting.
