In spiritual tradition, fasting helps to focus the mind on prayer. Physically, fasting changes the body. One statement I heard repeatedly over the years from multiple friends is that <strong>fasting reduces muscle tissue not fat<\/strong> , for which I found no scientific evidence yet. I rather found studies confirming <strong>fasting reduces fat long-term and saves muscle strength<\/strong>. Do you know more scientific studies?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Prolonged fasting produces a body-composition picture that is initially alarming but more nuanced on closer reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12322586\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prolonged Water\u2010Only Fasting Followed by a Whole\u2010Plant\u2010Food Diet Promotes Fat\u2010Free Mass Recovery and Continued Fat Mass Loss in Adults With Overweight or Obesity. Gabriel+ 2025<\/a> found in their study on 14-day water-fasting followed by 6+45 days of whole\u2010plant\u2010food diet:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>prior research suggested &#8220;fat\u2010free mass (FFM) accounts for approximately two\u2010thirds of weight loss&#8221; , which was replicated: &#8220;FFM accounted for 74% of total BW lost&#8221;. Of this, there is a &#8220;lack of clinically significant muscle wasting&#8221;, &#8220;a large portion of FFM lost during fasting likely reflects changes in hydration status rather than lean tissue catabolism&#8221;. <strong>Muscle<\/strong> protein is a <strong>minor<\/strong> portion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After 14 days, fat mass was reduced by 6%. After 65 days (at follow-up) reduced by 14%, &#8220;<strong>fat mass<\/strong> loss accounted for 67% of total body weight lost&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8718030\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Is muscle and protein loss relevant in long\u2010term fasting in healthy men? A prospective trial on physiological adaptations, Laurens+ 2021<\/a> found in their study on a 10-day Buchinger Wilhelmi (200\u2013250&nbsp;kcal\/day) fast followed by a 4-day food reintroduction and 90 day follow-up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>fat mass &#8220;FM loss accounted for 40\u00a0\u00b1\u00a02.1% of changes in total body weight&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lean soft tissue &#8220;LST loss accounted for 60.7\u00a0\u00b1\u00a02.1% of body weight loss, explained for 44% (\u22121.6\u00a0\u00b1\u00a00.1\u00a0kg) by extracellular water loss (which includes loss of faeces by enemas), for 14% (0.50\u00a0\u00b1\u00a00.01\u00a0kg) by early glycogen loss and its associated water, and for 42% by metabolic active (liver, kidneys, heart, intestine, <strong>muscles<\/strong>, etc.) tissues (1.5\u00a0\u00b1\u00a00.1\u00a0kg representing 25% of weight loss)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Strength was maintained in non\u2010weight\u2010bearing muscles and increased in weight\u2010bearing muscles (+33%, <em>P<\/em>\u00a0&lt;\u00a00.001)&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;3\u2010Methyl\u2010histidine, a marker of skeletal muscle breakdown, transiently increased during the first 4\u00a0days of fasting (<em>Figure<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8718030\/#jcsm12766-fig-0002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2G<\/a>) and returned thereafter to baseline values.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our results support the hypothesis: &#8220;muscle function to be preserved if fasting adaptations were selected during evolution&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;In our study, we did not notice changes in muscle physical properties&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems that fasting (water-only or Buchinger Wilhelmi)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>does decrease fat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>does decrease muscle mass in a minor portion in the beginning, with no change in muscle strenght<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which is consistent in an evolutionary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I do eat supplements while fasting.
